Get involved!

For those really interested in galaxies, extragalactic astronomy or the aspects of cosmology we study, we can always find an interesting problem to work on. Perhaps, at first those would be purely educational problems but as we get to know each other, there will crystallize real researc projects. These may involve data reduction and interpretation or comparing them with the theory. This might also involve developing the theory along any of the various directions in our field of research.

Cooperation of the student and their supervisor has two sides in it, and therefore choice of the project will mostly be yours.
Just come along. We will discuss it.

Courses offered

To make your work in the Group most effective, it would be useful to study the following courses read by our group members as well as the members of other groups in our and other institures. All the courses are read in Russian.

Physics of galaxies
Anatoly Zasov
4-5 years of study, one semester
Introduction to the field, which aims at developing general understanding of the physical processes going on in the complex systems of galaxies as well as the contemporary techniques to study those processes. General astrophysics and Galactic astronomy courses are considered prerequisites.

Programme (in Russian) »

Evolution of galaxies
Ol'ga Sil'chenko
4-5 years of study, one semester
An essential course of lectures from one of the world's leading specialists in the evolution of galaxies. The principle problems of physical, populational and chemical evolution of galaxies are considered as well as the theories of galaxy formation. Additional emphasis is put on the methods of experimental investigation and theoretical description that are applicable to the most up-to-date problems in this field of astronomy.

Programme (in Russian) »

Active galactic nuclei and quasars
Boris Komberg
4-5 years of study, one semester
A unifying view of the diverse field of active galactic nuclei is presented, various cosmological aspects of these objects are considered. Special attention is paid to the problem using active galactic nuclei to differentiate between various world models (spectral line absorption, gravitational lensing, distribution along the redshift coordinate). Different models of activity are reviewed with special attention to electrodynamic models of a black hole surrounded by a magnetized accretion disc, which can give rise to collimated jets.

Programme (in Russian) »

Astronomical optics
Sergey Potanin
4-5 years of study, one semester
A comprehensive course on the technical component of contemporary astronomical research applicable to galaxies as well.

Programme (in Russian) »

Elements of the stellar dynamics
Alexei Rastorguev
3-5 years of study, one semester
The general theory of classification and description of various stellar systems is considered. The necessary mathematical apparatus is introduced. A lot of attention is given to the current problem of the theory.

Programme (in Russian) »

Fundamentals of cosmology and black hole physics
Alexei Toporensky
4-5 years of study, one semester
A course into mathematical aspects of the evolution of the Universe, its dynamics and current cosmological problems. The black hole physics is considered in some detail.

Programme (in Russian) »

Galactic disc dynamics
Marina Zabolotskih
4-5 years of study, one semester
A course into the classical and contemporary theory of the stability of galactic stellar discs. Both analytical models and numerical experiments are considered - from the Boltzmann equation to the state-of-the-art non-linear analysis.

Programme (in Russian) »

Star formation
Vladimir Surdin
3-5 years of study, one semester
Contemporary view of the formation of stars is presented in astronomical, hydrodynamical and evolutionary framework. The star formation history in our and other galaxies as well as the analytical tools to study it are given.

Programme (in Russian) »

Supernovae and stellar wind in the interstellar medium
Tatiana Lozinskaya
4-5 years of study, one semester
The aim of the lectures is to consider supernovae explosions and stellar wind as processes that regulate the physical conditions of gas in galaxies. The set of tools necessary for the description of structure and kinematics of gas in galaxies is introduced and explained in great detail.
